Interview of School Psychologist About Social Media And Teens

* Why are so attractive digital social networks for young people?
The construction of identity is an essential process of adolescence is a phase in which the individual established interests and desires to express them in a social context.
Hence the importance of social networks, inviting teens to build a social identity through their profiles. However, adolescence is also characterized by a stage of turbulence where personality is not always built relationships in social networks can lead adolescents to some confusion in the search for identity and foment the painful shyness teenagers because they become able to communicate only through the Internet.

* Do you think that young dependency towards rsn suffering today could be considered a disease?
Several studies have shown that social networks generate a psychological addiction, including the University of Bergen titled “Facebook Addiction” that specifically talks about this issue. In this survey, adolescents and young people have been taught that are more likely dependence on the social network than adults.
Another study from Harvard University shows that sharing personal information on social networks increased interracial pressure. 80% of what we publish is generally related to privacy issues and is done with the intention of receiving a physical or emotional gratification, what psychologists call “positive reinforcement”. Thus, when publishing something and we get number of “like” or similar, this attention one receives an invitation to repeat the conduite. Enfin, the University of Maryland studied the social network users in 37 countries, after being asked to spend 24 hours without the Internet, 20% of the studied individuals presented symptoms similar to other addictions: anxiety, despair and emptiness emotional.La answer is yes, I think that social networks create dependence, studies guarantee, but I see every day in my students.

* Have you seen an evolution of this dependence since you started working?
When I started working social networks were a novelty, most students had no computer, nowadays, it is rare to see them without smartphone.
Currently, there is a huge generation gap between what we know as digital natives,” children who are born with their parents connected to Facebook, and adults who have had to adapt in a way or another at the speed of technological progress.

* Would you underachievement of some students to the excessive use of social networks?
The Interactive GenerationsAssociation published in its latest report titled” Social networks in the lives of your children “than 4-10 teenagers recognizes that being connected to social networks removes the time to study. This is confirmed by other figures provided by the study such as the probability to pass all subjects from 10 points among those who do not use social media and those who do. in fact, 1 in 3 teens with more than one account in social networks was above the average over three materials in their final evaluation.

* What are the negative effects that digital social networks among young people?
The problem is not the use but the abuse. When a young prefer chatting with a friend instead of living life is a problem.
Other potentially dangerous situations can come because of the large amount of personal information that users post on their profiles, they become true “digital identities” that facilitate quick knowledge of the contact information for the user preferences and habits, which already seem a significant risk, we make it easy victims for cyber harassment. But there are also other risks such as phishing and pharming, offenders obtain data on the economics of the family, identity theft, every time is more common is more common than users who have never registered on the networks trying to access their digital identityit is already used, the installation and use of “cookies” without knowledge of the user, which allows the platform form of knowledge that is the activity of the user. With these tools, social networking can see the place from which the user accesses, connection time, the unit from which connects (fixed or mobile), operating system used, the more websites visited within a website, number of clicks, and a good number of data concerning the development of the life of the user within the network. It’s a little scary. At least for people like me who are born with a certain technological fear.

* Do you believe that there a youth overexposure with Social Media?
I see it every day, my students showed me pictures and information that should not be in public, overexposure makes us vulnerable, but it is irresistible to most teens all tell publish what they do on these Facebook walls or “timelines” of twitter. My advice is not to do and if we can not avoid it, at least to control who can see it.
Sometimes I wonder what would have been my childhood with the Internet and it is a relief that there was no social network in my teens, I think that young people are under constant social pressure, adolescence is already a difficult step.

Social Media And Teens

* What are the means to be used to avoid these problems?
Especially the information to avoid dangerous situations and avoid excessive dependence on new technologies. Maybe my position may be considered excessive, but I think that children should not have a smartphone to a certain age, the child is unable to control the passing of time on new technologies, which, as I said can be very addictive and there is no constant monitoring, which is sometimes impossible, we can cause future problems.
